FAQ

Your Questions Answered

Choosing acupuncture is an important decision, and it’s natural to have questions. Below are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.

How many treatments will you need? Every patient is different. Some people notice improvement after only a few visits, while others benefit from a series of treatments. We’ll discuss recommendations based on your individual health concerns and goals.

Are the needles reused? Acupuncture needles in the United States should never be re-used. Here at The Gathering Point Community Acupuncture we follow clean needle technique and use sterile, disposable, stainless steel needles for your safety. These needles are disposed of after single use into biohazard containers. Our patient’s health and safety is our priority.

Is acupuncture safe? When performed by a qualified, licensed practitioner using sterile, single use needles, acupuncture is considered a safe and well-established therapy.

Does acupuncture hurt? Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable acupuncture feels. The needles used are extremely thin – much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws. Many patients feel little to no discomfort and often become deeply relaxed during the treatment. Some people may feel a dull, achy sensation, itching or a tickle, and these are all good signs.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance? Some insurance companies cover acupuncture and some don’t. Some acupuncturists take insurance for acupuncture but not a lot of us do. In community acupuncture clinic our lowest sliding scale price is around your co-pay. You can ask for a receipt to turn into your insurance but we do not bill insurance.

Can I use my HSA card? Of course. We are a medical treatment and that is what your HSA card is for.

Can acupuncture be combined with my medical care? Yes. Many people use acupuncture alongside traditional medical care as part of a comprehensive wellness plan. Always inform all healthcare providers about the different treatments you are receiving.

What should I wear? Loose comfortable clothing is recommended. Many acupuncture points can be accessed by simply rolling up pant legs or sleeves. If you are female coming for upper back/scapula area pain you may want to wear a tank top or camisole.

What if I am nervous? That is completely normal. We will answer your questions, explain the process and make sure you feel comfortable before beginning treatment.

Can acupuncture help arthritis? Yes! Acupuncture is not a cure for arthritis but it can help arthritis by stimulating the nervous system to release endorphins and reduce inflammation. The needles inserted into the body can improve tight muscles, improve local blood circulation to the area and block pain signals to the brain. Acupuncture can help with the pain of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Can acupuncture help stress and anxiety? Yes! Acupuncture can boost serotonin, GABA and endorphins to help our body relax and improve emotional regulation. The tiny acupuncture needles can lower stress hormones like cortisol and switch off the fight or flight response. Auricular acupuncture is especially wonderful for this and many patients notice improvements in stress management, sleep quality and overall emotional well-being.

How long is a treatment? A treatment can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. A lot of this depends on your body. Some people fall asleep and some do not, so really it is all up to the individual body. As long as you are relaxed and not thinking about what you are doing next, what you are having for dinner or your date later in the evening, the acupuncture needles are doing their thing.

Is community acupuncture private? Although treatments take place in a shared room, every patients care remains individualized and confidential. Many patients find the calm, shared healing of the room relaxing. If you are uncomfortable with certain areas of the body being exposed there are blankets and I am happy to cover you up! The needles are flexible and the blankets do not disturb the needles.

What should I expect on my first treatment? Your first visit includes time to discuss your health history, current concerns, lifestyle and wellness goals before beginning the treatment. You can download the paperwork and fill it out in advance or you can fill it out when you arrive.

What conditions does acupuncture help with? Acupuncture is commonly used to support people experiencing chronic pain, arthritis, neck and back pain, headaches, migraines, stress, anxiety, digestive concerns, respiratory concerns, allergies, diabetes support, sleep difficulties, women’s health, sports injuries, and many other conditions. Your treatment plan is personalized to your individual needs.
